Tips For Cleaning Your Wood Siding

If your home has wood siding, learning how to properly clean it is essential to ensure it stays healthy and beautiful. Regular cleaning and maintenance extend the longevity of your wood siding and helps prevent any damage. Take a look at some tips to help you get started:

Hand Cleaning Wood Siding

When it comes to deep cleaning wood siding, it’s best to do so by hand. For scrubbing, gather the following tools to get the job done:

  • A large bucket of water
  • Rubber gloves
  • A nylon stiff-bristle brush
  • Trisodium phosphate powder (TSP)

Start by mixing the powder with the water in the large bucket. The rubber gloves are important because the TSP, though a powerful and effective cleaning agent, can cause allergic reactions on the skin. Dip your brush into the solution, start scrubbing along with the orientation of the wood, and rinse thoroughly with water. When rinsing, a simple garden hose is best because pressure washers can be too intense and cause damage to the siding.

A periodical rinse with the garden hose is often enough of a fix if your wood siding isn’t too dirty. You can also make a quick and effective cleaner by mixing equal parts water and vinegar and scrubbing with a soft bristle brush.

How to Get Rid of Mold and Mildew On Your Wood Siding

If you’re dealing with more serious problems such as mold, grime, and mildew, you’ll need to take a different approach. If you’re trying to tackle some mold, carefully use a bleach solution in the problem areas. Be sure first to test a small section of the wood to ensure it won’t damage it. For tough grime and mildew, invest in a commercial siding cleaner to scrub all that gunk off.
